The first guide to Extra Virgin Olive Oil in South Africa has been published and is an excellent tool for the consumer to find and buy this healthy local product.
The guide, published by Overberg Publications and Promotions, was compiled by Glynis van Rooyen and designed by Hanlie Allan, both from Hermanus, and features 48 producers and information on how to taste, identify and store extra virgin olive oil. The medical benefits of using EVOO are also clarified as are some myths and assumptions regarding its use.
Details on each producer include the styles of oil they produce, how much they produce, cultivars of olives planted, where they are and their contact details for sales and tastings.
The guide is aimed at the consumer in South Africa who is generally uninformed about the quality and benefits of locally produced oil. Imported oils are often chosen above local oils by the consumer because of ignorance and the local product is often far superior.
The guide is available from the publishers: glynis@thewineguides.co.za or the SA Olive Association: info@saolive.co.za
