Olive Oil And Cereal – Breakfast Of Champions

As most of us are aware, extra virgin olive oil is packed with health benefits and over the past few years we are seeing a rise in the use of olive oil in many dishes. People have started to realize that good quality olive oil also adds great flavor to dishes and compliments many different flavours, even the unexpected like ‘dark chocolate and olive oil ice-cream’, and other decadent deserts.

While olive oil is taking the cake as the ‘It’’ ingredient in many ways, most wouldn’t consider the pairing of olive oil and breakfast cereals.

Last year a media photo captured actor and director Felipe Mattei, pouring olive oil on his breakfast cereal. He made the point that olive oil is a much tastier and healthier substitute for unhealthy animal fats such as cream or milk.

This notion of coupling olive oil and cereal is not only advocated by Mattei. Some renowned chefs have created some exceptional olive inspired breakfast dishes and they seem to be very popular on the menus.

At Oat Meals restaurant in New York City, one of their popular dishes is oats topped with EVOO, sea salt and cracked black pepper and then finished with a layer of fluffy parmesan cheese. Apparently this crowd favourite goes well with bacon and has the consistency of a cheesy risotto.

Well-known chef and restaurateur Bruno Loubet at the Zetter hotel in London regularly breakfasts on porridge to which he adds olive oil, honey and a layer of chopped garlic.

New York Times columnist Mark Bittman also promotes the olive oil and oats pairing with his suggestion of steel cut oatmeal, drizzled with a fruity EVOO and 1-2 tablespoons of black or green olive tapenade on the side of the bowl.

The concept is not a novel idea, in the 70’s it was common to pour olive oil into one’s cereal. With the rise in the low-fat diet, olive oil was condemned to be too high in fat. Over the years it’s come to light that these fats are actually extremely beneficial.

A few tablespoons of EVOO daily can help lower risk of cardiovascular disease, breast cancer and assists in reducing inflammation. With all these great olive oil breakfast ideas, it doesn’t seem too bad getting your daily dose with your morning meal.
