A team of top tasters are gathered at Nederburg this week to scrutinize contenders for the 2015 SA Olive Awards. The competition, now in its 10th year, has drawn 91 entries which will be rated one-by-one over four days to declare South Africa’s best extra virgin olive oils.
The esteemed judge’s panel comprises: international olive oil expert Mauro Amelio from the National Association for Olive Oil Tasters (ONAOO) in Italy plus local olive oil experts Gerrie Duvenage, Kelly White, Leonard Arangies, Louise Rabie, Reni Hildenbrand, Robert Claasens, Benedetta Lami and Anne-Marie Ferreira. An International Olive Oil Council (IOC) accredited panel leader, Amelio has run a number of panel and threshold courses around the world and is affiliated with ONAOO as a tutor, taster and scientific advisor. The local judges have all completed an official judging course and passed the international threshold test.
Medalists in the Delicate, Medium and Intense Extra Virgin Olive Oil categories will be rated according to quality, complexity and balance in terms of aroma and taste during the four-day blind tasting from 11-14 August.
The top olive oils in each category, the Olive Achiever of the Year and recipient of the Mentorship Award will be announced during a glittering awards ceremony at Ashanti Estate on 3 September.
