Nick and Brenda Wilkinson have owned Rio Largo since 2010 and they both share a passion for producing and providing quality olive oil to consumers. They have gained a tremendous amount of knowledge about producing excellent olive oil and understand the benefits that quality olive oils can have on one’s health.  With that understanding, together with Zikhona Tefu and Sarah Taylor, Rio Largo has created two beautiful body products that incorporate their nourishing olive oil.

Olive Oil Soap

In early 2011 Zikhona began her research into natural skincare products, with a focus on soaps. What initially stimulated her interest and research journey was to find out more about natural alternatives to soap, that wouldn’t irritate certain skin conditions like many soaps do. Later that same year, after an extensive amount of research, her first batch of soap, which was free of cheap, chemical laden ingredients found in most body products on the market.

The process began with learning the science of cold-process soap making and the refinement of her fynbos and olive oil based soap formula. Zikhona produces this soap for Rio Largo using their olive oils.

Olive Oil Balm

Sarah Taylor is the creator of the Rio Largo olive oil balm. Both her and her husband’s family are prone to allergies. According to Taylor:

Cortisone and antihistamines have been a mainstay of our well-being for decades about a year ago I realised just what they using   – mostly mineral oil/petroleum-based, hydrocarbon products containing preservatives, such as parabens.

She started looking into natural, non-toxic alternatives she could make at home. A friend gave her a basic ‘baby balm’ recipe, which she had made, based on olive and grape seed oils and beeswax. Thus her journey into making natural skincare products began.

Sarah started giving her homemade products out to friends and family and found that after a few weeks of using her balm many of their skin conditions and allergies were relieved. They raved about her product. She has since adapted her balm and the ingredients include Rio Largo olive oil, sweet almond and jojoba oils, grape seed and apricot kernel oils, beeswax, and dried lavender and calendula flowers.

Some of the ingredients and their health benefits used in Rio Largo’s body products:

Olive (Olea europaea) oil has moisturising properties and is quickly absorbed into the skin. It is packed with anti-oxidants to help repair cellular damage caused by the natural process of ageing. Olive oil also has a sun protection factor (SPF) of 8.

Grape (Vitis Vinifera) seed oil is a non-greasy and light skin oil. It is packed with anti-oxidants, has regenerative and restructuring properties, and is effective in wound, anti-ageing and acne treatments. It has mild astringent properties that help to tighten and tone the skin, and can reduce swelling. It is rich in essential fatty acids, especially linoleic acid, which strengthens cell membranes. Its anti-oxidant properties also prevent pores from becoming clogged.

Sweet almond (Prunus amygdalus dulcis) oil contains Vitamins A, B1, B2 and B6,and is extremely rich in Vitamin E, which makes it an excellent moisturiser for dry or inflamed skin. It is easily absorbed into the skin and has an SPF of 5.

Nick and Brenda Wilkinson of Rio Largo are extremely proud to have added both these products to their range.
