Financial Mail Covers SA Olive Industry

In September (2013), the Financial Mail gave some excellent coverage to the South African olive industry, publishing 2 articles covering various current topics within the industry.

The first article, entitled New Olive Oil Entrant Scoops Top Awards, focuses on olive oil producer, De Rustica, which won gold in all 3 categories of the SA Olive Awards, as well as a spot in the Absa Top 5. While revealing some background around De Rustica, the article also touches on some key information about the South African industry as a whole.

The article reiterates the point that South Africa is producing some of the best olive oil in the world, but we are still importing a lot.

The second article is entitled, Olive Oil: Call For Anti Subsidy Duty, looks at the extremely important issue of imported olive oil and its effect on the local market. Because of subsidies in Europe, the olive oil (often of dubious quality because there are no controls in place) can be sold around the world at very cheap prices (dumped).

The SA olive industry has applied for a countervailing duty on imported olive oil, which would compensate for the subsidised prices. Interestingly SA imports almost 7m litres of olive oil, while local production for the same period will only be about 1.5m litres. So there is plenty of room for the SA olive industry to expand, and create jobs, if we can address the issue of cheap imports.
