Flos Olei 2016: A Worldwide Guide of EVOO

Flos Olei is an extensive international guide to the world of olive oil, available in both English and Italian, it aims to inform and educate olive oil lovers and producers about the best farms and producers from around the world.

Premio Flos Olei - The Best 20

The guide consists of an introduction and display of the olive growing sector in 49 different countries, providing historical and cultural information of the areas as well as production data.

The seventh edition of the Flos Olei guide has a big international focus. This year 49 countries on all continents are included in the guide, with a total of 500 farms and 692 oils. Every farm is described in a card with notes about oil tasting and culinary matches.

500 cards describe the most interesting farms and their best product selected by an official panel of expert tasters. Additionally, 192 extra virgin olive oils produced by the same farms are mentioned and recommended, although they were not selected, for a total number of 692 oils. – Flos Olei

Not only is Flos Olei the most broad international olive production and recommendation guide but is also environmentally conscious, being printed using FSC paper (an international certification stating that the paper used comes from forests planted only for an editorial purpose).

The guide gives readers a complete overview of high quality productions on a world scale, and also represent a real manual on extra virgin olive oil, focusing on the various cultivars, production methods and tasting techniques.

While the Mediterranean is commonly associated with some of the best olive oils and is the founder of olive growing and pressing, Flos Olei is aware that more and more countries worldwide are also producing exceptional quality olive oils and these countries are constantly gaining ground on the international market. These emerging countries such as Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are acknowledged for the quality of their production in the guide.

“The Best 20” of the year 2016 shows that quality has no boundaries. By now anyone can produce high quality extra virgin olive oil, not only the Italians and the other traditional olive growing countries, for this reason the countries excelling in the quality of their products are many. – Marco Oreggia, editor of Flos Olie

The Best 20
The prizes that make up “The Best 20” in the Flos Olei guide are not only awarded for the high organoleptic qualities of the oils, but are mainly based on the quality each farm has shown over the years and the added value this represents for its area of production.

The Best - Flos Olei

Single oils are not awarded with a prize but rather “The Best 20” list awards a “Quality Prize” to the farms which have succeeded in optimising the whole productive sector in the twenty categories. Small farms (the Emerging Farm, the Frontier Farm) are encouraged and rewarded for their passion and care as the “Made with Love Farm”.

Besides “The Best 20”, three other prizes are given to The Importer of the Year, The Restaurant of the Year and finally a special prize is dedicated to our friend Cristina Tiliacos, journalist and contributor to the Guide, who worked with us professionally and competently and has sadly passed away. This award is generally given to people, bodies or associations that have committed themselves to the promotion and diffusion of olive cultivation. – Flos Olei

The guide is a group work, edited and published by Marco Oreggia, journalist, food-and-wine critic and expert taster, and by Laura Marinelli, journalist and expert taster. Important national and international olive oil experts and a panel of tasters, coordinated by the editor, have also contributed to the realisation of the guide.

The chart below is a list of all SA oils that have been included in the guide over the years. The producers highlighted in orange are the producers present in the Flos Olei 2016 edition. The others have been included in the past editions.
