Last night, Thursday 1st September, we had the pleasure of attending the 2016 SA Olive Awards gala dinner held at Kronenburg function venue in Paarl, where a total of 36 extra virgin olive oils (EVOO) of the 2016 harvest were acclaimed as South Africa’s finest.
Baleia Wines, situated near the small town of Vermaaklikheid along the Cape South Coast, has partnered with famous food personalities, Ilse van der Merwe (The Food Fox and Die Kosvos) and Hein van Tonder (Heinstirred) by supplying them with their award winning extra virgin olive oil.
This year, Rio Largo, a South African olive oil producer, was awarded Best In Class for their Premium Blend Extra Virgin Olive Oil at the New York International Olive Oil Competition.
The judges took on the arduous task to analyse a record 110 entries and identify this year’s top-rated extra virgin olive oils. It is the most extensive tasting yet in the 11 year history of the competition.
